Rocking The Virtual World
Three-dimensional virtual worlds are the next frontier for social
networks. Among them Kaneva stands out for its simplicity. On the Web Facebook is the flavor of the moment, with 55 million users and a valuation of $15 billion. So what's the next big thing?
Three-dimensional communities. In a recent study Gartner predicted that
by 2011 up to 80% of active Internet users, or 250 million people, will
participate online in virtual worlds.

Welcome to My World
For Christopher Klaus and his burgeoning online 3D community Kaneva
- as it as grown to some 800,000 members - that meant recently moving
the office space to a 28,000-square-foot floor of an office building
near the heart of Buckhead.
As construction crews customize
the space, housing just 50 staffers for now, the finishing touches are
also underway in the virtual space, and growth is anticipated for both.
Kaneva
means canvas in Latin, and Klaus means it as a digital canvas, where
members are free to create their own alter ego, their avatar, and ditto
their environment. Create as in there are 400,000 options in creating
one's avatar, though all must take on human form.
Similar to
SIMS or Second Life, but with a counterintuitive theme of reality,
Kaneva surely has a business model, which partnerships with Turner New
Products and YouTube can attest. He describes Kaneva as more Facebook
than fantasyland. There's currency and transactions, competitions and
multi-player activities. There's profiles and friends, and there are
rules.

Christopher Klaus moves virtual world into real space with help from Wm. Leonard & Co.
Christopher Klaus, one of Atlanta's most
successful entrepreneurs, has moved Kaneva, his 3D virtual world and
the company that supports it, into larger offices in the Perimeter area
with help from Wm. Leonard & Co., real estate specialists for
high-growth companies.
Kaneva engaged Wm. Leonard & Co. to help search for new office
space, manage lease negotiations, and provide counsel regarding the
logistics of the relocation.
Christopher Klaus founded Internet
Security Systems (ISS) in 1993, while he was a student at Georgia Tech.
Thirteen years later he sold the firm to IBM for $1.3 billion. Four
years ago he founded Kaneva to combine social networking gaming, media
sharing, and interpersonal communication in a 3D virtual world. In a
short time, Kaneva has attracted more than one million members.
"I believe that virtual worlds will be the next fully immersive way
that people engage with each other," says Klaus. "We are in the infancy
of this exciting new industry and are excited about the many
opportunities to innovate, and to bring people together in ways that
only a few years ago would have seemed like science fiction."

Real life intrudes on the virtual world
"On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog," says one pooch to another in front of a computer screen, in the famous 1993 New Yorker cartoon. In the online worlds of World of Warcraft and Second Life, you can be a dog, elf or an orc, and nobody knows you're a human. But the desire to don a virtual disguise may now be waning. In some of the newest virtual worlds, people are happier being themselves. Avatars are accurate representations of their owners and a right-click of the mouse over their characters can reveal their real name, age and interests. Video games have historically been the main influence for virtual worlds, but the new trend for real-life representation is being driven by social networking. "The next killer application to spread adoption mainstream of virtual worlds is going to be integration with social networks," says Corey Bridges, executive producer at Multiverse, a creator of online-world software.

Virtual meetings bring serious business to online worlds
Chris Klaus, the Atlanta Internet entrepreneur who founded Kaneva, a virtual social site where members can go to virtual dance parties, cruise virtual shopping malls and live in virtual homes, said that "you're never going to replace the face-to-face meeting. But maybe instead of flying around the country every week doing sales calls, there's a more efficient way to do some of it virtually." Klaus said he envisions the day when companies hold virtual meetings inside Kaneva or businesses and consumers buy real-world goods through virtual stores in the online fantasy world. But "we've still got a ways to go," he acknowledged. "I think virtual worlds generally are still a little more complicated than they should be right now." Clearly though, businesses are starting to bet on them.

Is Kaneva a Disruptor?
Recently, I've seen a great deal of positive press about the virtual world Kaneva. Second Life has been the big player in the space, stealing much of the spotlight from other worlds. But, as we've shared in previous blog posts,
it's certainly not the only virtual world out there. With millions and
millions of people creating virtual lives, this space will only grow
and reshape as the market defines itself. So, this Forbes article ("Rocking the Virtual World") says:
Among the producers of virtual worlds Atlanta's Kaneva may be on its way to becoming the most "disruptive," according to Strategy & Innovation, a Cambridge, Mass. newsletter founded by Harvard Business School's Clayton Christensen.
That's quite a statement. But, why Kaneva? Certainly Second Life has
the greater mind share. Well, the article goes on with a quote from
founder Christopher Klaus:
"Second Life currently has huge mind share, but they are after a
different market," says Klaus. "We want people who have never played
videogames before."
This is significant. Kaneva, unlike Second Life (and other worlds),
encourages users to replicate themselves in-world, as opposed to
creating a fantasy version of themselves. Kaneva wants to be the
MySpace or Facebook of virtual worlds - a place to openly share your
life and your interests with your friends. In fact, Kaneva has often
been compared to the social network MySpace, not a frequent comparison
for Second Life.

Why Virtual Worlds Are Overtaking the Game Industry
More
and more game developers seem to be turning their attention to virtual
worlds. Why? Although games can have communities around them, virtual
worlds do very well in facilitating communities. Perhaps gamemakers
could learn some valuable lessons from worlds like Second Life or Raph
Koster's newly announced Metaplace. The
bar for online gaming has been raised, with community becoming as
important as gameplay. Virtual worlds and Web 2.0 habits are driving
users to worlds that support socializing instead of questing and
user-created content instead of magic.

They describe it as a social experience, a multiplayer dance game with
dance battles, competition and a build-your-own-nightclub feature.
Interestingly, Kaneva claims the number of users Dance Party 3D can
support for gameplay and socializing is unlimited. It also promises over 55 million possible options for avatar

Kaneva Brings Dance Competitions to Its Clubs, Pre-Paid Cards to Target
When we spoke with Kaneva CEO Christopher Klaus back in August, he

series of casual games in its fourth quarter. The first, Dance Party 3D,
launches tomorrow with prepaid cards for access and bonus items, in $10
and $25 varieties, appearing in Target by October 1. What sets Dance
Party apart from a business point is that it's being marketed as a
standalone game instead of just a value-add for existing Kaneva users.

More Companies Are Using Virtual Worlds But Few Have Strategies to Deal With Them
A new report from The Conference Board finds
that virtual worlds are emerging fast on the business landscape, but
few companies have developed strategies to deal with them. Membership
is now in the millions, and many of the participants are not just
customers, but employees. A virtual world is a 3-D Internet-based simulated social networking
community, usually modeled after the "real" world, with buildings,
roads, meeting rooms, bars and billboards. Generally, many users
participate at any time, with the interaction being immediate - taking
place in real time. Some examples of virtual worlds include Second Life , Kaneva and There.

"One of the things we're trying to do that's different is to get people
to be themselves. In World of Warcraft, you're usually playing an Orc

A Future for Live Music in Kaneva?
Oftentimes, when exploring brave new worlds or re-visiting old and
forgotten ones, the ever-churning mind of the futurist sometimes has to
endure the very things that others would be so quick to dismiss. It's
not an easy job, and it certainly thrusts the futurist far outside the
comfort zone. I find this when studying Kaneva, one of the other virtual worlds
that may surpass There.com to be one of Second Life's major
competitors. One of the areas that I see success for Kaneva is with
music live and otherwise.

Relocating a Project to Kaneva from Second Life
Where Kaneva shines is with media the management of media that occurs
outside of the 3D space in that myspace/facebook type of environment.
Those that are on the Kaneva grid, as well as those outside, are able
to listen to the playlists, download, or dance accordingly. As this
young virtual world evolves, it's quite possible if they take the
right steps it may very well be one of the most valuable new frontiers
for the indie musician for performances, promotion, and sales.

"We are redefining how online videos can be consumed and

their favorite media -- including video, photos, and games -- as
another way to express their interests and connect with others."

Kaneva, your world.. your imagination!
For about a month to be exact, I have been
discovering the virtual world. I just had to see what was it
all about.
Second Life is probably the most known virtual world, and there are about 30 of them. The newest world that I know of is Kaneva.
Simply put, Kaneva is a mash up of Myspace, YouTube and Second Life all together. In Kaneva you "teleport yourself, your media and your imagination into the modern-day 3D world
". So with Kaneva you get a 2D profile (like Myspace) that has your
info, pics, blog and comment box... you get to upload your media:
videos ( the YouTube part) and music, and you connect all that with
your 3D self in after you download the World of Kaneva software.

MySpace Elements Could Make Kaneva the Real Thing
Virtual worlds, like Second Life and Entropia,
are well virtual. Avatars created in these worlds often have little or
no relevance to their real life users. However, with the fairly recent
creation of Kaneva, the line between the virtual world and the real world may begin to look rather blurry. Kaneva, which is still in its beta version, was developed by Chris Klaus, who created Internet Security Systems (ISS)
and later sold it for $1.3 billion. Since selling ISS, Klaus has
directed his attention full-time to designing Kaneva and giving a very
different feel than virtually any other world out there right now.

Kaneva canvasses 3-D social networking
Kaneva. It's the Latin word for canvas. It's also one of the newest in the flurry of virtual worlds cropping up in cyberspace. This one is a sort of SimCity meets Facebook--a 3D world where you're given your own apartment in the virtual world, a T-shirt, jeans and a few other belongings upon sign up. Once you've established residence, it's all about social networking. You create a personal profile much like you would on MySpace or Facebook and then invite people to hang out with you and find people based on shared interests.

Because Kaneva has built a 3D virtual world that is in closed beta and only available to its most active users. Everyone seems to want in. Kaneva launches 'Keep It Real!'
-- Premiere Sponsorship Program --
ATLANTA, GA - (March 4, 2009) Kaneva, a social entertainment world that unifies Web 2.0 social networking with an immersive 3D world, announces today their ' Keep it Real!' premiere sponsorship model for brand opportunities.
"We are opening up our doors and welcoming select consumer brands to engage with our growing member base and experience marketing in an entirely new way," said Christopher Klaus, Founder and CEO of Kaneva. "With Kaneva, we push traditional online marketing campaigns into an interactive, entertainment world where brands have the opportunity to become content providers," said Klaus.
' Keep it Real!' is set to launch during the Engage! Expo in New York City March 10-11, 2009; however, Kaneva is already engaged in conversations with several large brands to add a 2D/3D experience to their online presence in 2009. ' Keep it Real!' follows a successful Kaneva consumer public beta where membership has grown to over 1.5 million people.
Kaneva represents an extraordinary branding opportunity for companies. Designed from the ground up to appeal to the mainstream online consumer, Kaneva's experience offers social networking, media sharing, and simplicity - all of which make it the right fit for marketing mavens to take the plunge into a fused 2D/3D experience.
"With ' Keep it Real!' we are encouraging brands to explore our exciting program offerings, which cover a range of themes from apparel, home furnishings, electronics to exclusive destinations and much more," said Jeffrey Longoria, Kaneva's Chief Revenue Officer.
Brand safe and optimized, Kaneva's immersive 2D/3D environment enables brands to become content providers in a relevant, modern-day world. Kaneva encourages its members to extend their real lives online, connect with friends, to share their interests, and to engage in real time activities.
Instead of a virtual, cartoonish or fantasy world, Kaneva ' Keeps it Real!' by virtually bringing together the best of what real life has to offer.

Kaneva Takes Virtual World Mainstream with IBM
IBM, SAN JOSE, CA - (October 10, 2007) - Kaneva, a rapidly growing digital world for the masses, today announced at the Virtual Worlds Conference that it has standardized on IBM (NYSE: IBM) servers to support consumers worldwide who want to blend social networking and entertainment in an immersive 3-D environment.
Kaneva's business model is a mixture of ad support, premium membership, and sales of virtual goods. Currently in beta, Kaneva's unique approach to combining the 3-D Internet with social networking capabilities from MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and more has already proven to be popular with registered users approaching 700,000. Kaneva recognized it needed to standardize on a server platform that effectively scales. IBM System x servers, powered by IBM's X-Architecture, proved to be the right match for Kaneva's instancing software capability, which enables up to 1000 people to fit on a single server.
"IBM brings deep industry knowledge and a clear understanding of our business model, and recognizes the importance of cultivating a collaborative virtual world ecosystem," said Christopher Klaus, founder and CEO, Kaneva. "As we looked ahead, IBM had the vision we were seeking, along with the technology stability to support and manage the fast-paced growth that we anticipate for Kaneva."
Social networking and rich media are core features of Kaneva, and the world is built for the mainstream consumer, an extension of the real world where you can meet with your friends in real-time. IBM System x3650 servers will be key as Kaneva's widespread appeal grows to accommodate millions of members with high computing performance and reliability, while keeping costs and power requirements down.
Kaneva recently launched Dance Party 3D, the first virtual world-based, massive multi-player online (MMO) dance game where hundreds of thousands of people can simultaneously compete and win dance battles, spin playlists, party at clubs and even build their own 3D nightspot.
Dance Party 3D is the first game to support an unlimited number of players for game play and socializing, along with the added ability to explore a growing 3D world with thousands of virtual homes and hangouts. IBM System x ensures Kaneva will have enough computing power and memory to support this pioneering MMO casual game in a virtual world.
"As the 3D Internet evolves, we will see a transformation in how businesses use these environments to realize business value," said Dave Laux, global executive for games and interactive entertainment at IBM. "Kaneva is an exciting alternative, bringing 3-D virtual world to audiences of all ages in a way that is safe for brands and is a natural extension for content distribution and social networking."
IBM has a strong global focus on the media and entertainment industry across all of its services and products, serving all the major industry segments -- entertainment, publishing, information providers, media networks and advertising. For more information, visit http://www.ibm.com/media

Dance Party 3D Rocks Your World:
Kaneva Launches World's Largest Dance Game and Collector Game Cards, First Dance Game Inside a Virtual World
ATLANTA, GA - (September 25, 2007) - Everybody dance now! Kaneva, a rapidly growing virtual world with over 625,000 members, today launched Dance Party 3D, a free, casual game and social experience like no other. Kaneva's Dance Party 3D is the first virtual world-based, massive multi-player online (MMO) dance game where hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe can simultaneously bust out cool moves on the dance floor, compete and win dance battles, spin hot playlists, party at amazing clubs and even build their own rockin' 3D nightspot.
Kaneva's Dance Party 3D is free to join and play. It's the first game to support an unlimited number of players for game play and socializing, along with the added ability to explore a growing 3D world with thousands of virtual homes and hangouts.
"Kaneva's 3D virtual world is full of fun, friends and exciting entertainment," said Christopher Klaus, founder and CEO of Kaneva. "Today's launch of Dance Party 3D is an expansion of our community's love to connect, dance, compete, share music and build cool clubs."
Players can join the party by signing up for free at www.DanceParty3D.com. In addition, starting today, consumers can purchase Kaneva's first-ever collector game cards being sold exclusively in a major retailer's stores nationwide. The series of four collector game cards, being sold at $10 and $25 denominations, are redeemed online for immediate access to the game and include bonus, exclusive virtual dance gear and bonus credits ($25 denomination only) that can be used to buy more virtual items in Kaneva.
Get the Party Started
Players start off by creating their unique 3D persona or avatar. With over 55 million possible options and new avatar fashions available daily, players can create a 3D self with their very own style. For the fun to begin, avatars teleport into one of the two new Kaneva clubs created to feature the game or into one of thousands of Dance Party 3D Clubs created by Kaneva members. Once inside a Dance Party 3D club, players are immediately part of the party and can step onto the dance floor to start battling other players. Players can also choose to be spectators, can watch and take in the action, chat with others, and cheer on their friends.
Be the Next Kaneva Dance Star
Limelight seekers can take center stage and execute the perfect disco or hip hop move in the ultimate dance contest. Players start off doing simple dance moves, but as keystrokes become more accurate and faster, the steps get more advanced and impressive. Mastering these keystrokes helps players move on to the next level and earn "flares" - special moves such as back flips or complicated spins sure to impress everyone in the club. A multi-colored scoreboard shows players where they rank among other dancers. Players can also upload their videos and photos on the Dance Party 3D site to attract fans and win prizes.
Create Your Own Dance Club
Kaneva is the first to give its community the ability to create and host their own 3D Dance Parties in their very own dance club. VIP booths, video screens, swanky bars, chic sky lounges, hip mood lighting...the club design options are limitless. Party hosts can feature their own music mixes and generate buzz with special promotions and dance contests red carpet optional, of course. And if virtual partygoers rave about a sizzling hangout, the establishment moves up the leader board with an opportunity to gain recognition, earn Kaneva rewards and win prizes.
Calling all DJ's: Become a Virtual Mix Master
Dance Party 3D also lets players bring their music passion to the turntable and become a DJ. Diverse genres hip hop, rock, techno, salsa and country let
DJs create personal music mixes. If players submit their music mix and it gets enough raves, they'll see their selections jump to the top of the playlist!
For more information and to join the party, visit www.DanceParty3D.com.

At Under the Radar Conference produced by Dealmaker Media
-Conference Judges selected the Virtual World of Kaneva as the most innovative virtual world-
ATLANTA, GA -(July 10, 2007) - Kaneva, a virtual entertainment world unifying the 2D web with a 3D experience, was recognized as the most disruptive and innovative virtual world at the Under the Radar Conference produced by Dealmaker Media. Kaneva, which recently announced YouTube integration, demonstrated their web experience along side several other emerging virtual worlds including Doppelganger, Meez and Multiverse. The companies were judged based on their use of emerging technologies as well as for their new business opportunities for marketers.
After the virtual worlds demonstrated each site and technology the panel of judges, consisting of active Web 2.0 industry experts and an audience of early-adopters, were able to ask questions and offer feedback on business models and market opportunities. The panel also offered suggestions on areas for improvement, and how best to build up the virtual world audience. Following this process, the panel identified Kaneva as the clear winner among the competition.
Kaneva's unique model offers consumers, upon sign up at www.Kaneva.com , a 2D social network Profile, a 3D persona or avatar and a virtual home in the 3D Virtual World of Kaneva. Members can customize their Profile, and create their Avatar using over 55 million different combinations of facial features, body types, and hair styles.
As members develop their Profiles, Entertainment and Communities, these areas are instantly "teleported" from the 2D Web into the modern-day 3D Virtual World. Members can then teleport "in-world" to explore and meet with friends in their 3D homes or in a 3D community hang-out. They can decorate their virtual homes to reflect their own style, play their favorite video on their virtual home TVs, listen to music on a 3D boom box, and even hang their real-life family photos on their virtual walls. To upgrade their home or buy additional items, residents can purchase Kaneva "credits" to get cool clothing, stylish furniture, or to buy virtual gifts for their friends.
Kaneva seeks to offer consumers and marketers alike an unrivaled experience that is engaging and oriented around 2D and 3D personal entertainment.
About Under the Radar by Dealmaker Media
Under the Radar began as an evening networking event in April 2003. After months of sold-out events, we were urged by our network of executives and VCs to create a full-day event: effectively a one-stop shop to evaluate and explore new business opportunities, partnerships, potential investments, and trends in several technology sectors. In 2007, IBDNetwork became Dealmaker Media, and Under the Radar continues to be one of the most respected and attended technology conferences in Silicon Valley.
